What is a Power Purchase Agreement or a PPA? In its simplest form, a Power Purchase Agreement is a contract between an energy generator and an energy supplier for the purchase of energy. An energy generator would be any business that has a generation asset. For example, a solar, wind or CHP solution that generates more energy than is required on-site and as such have an excess that they can sell. As with all energy, the excess generation is a commodity and there is a market for its purchase within the energy industry. The Power Purchase Agreement is the contract between the generator and the supplier for the purchase of the generated energy.
There are three parties involved in any PPA – the generator / producer of the energy, utility / energy firm and offtaker (recipient of the energy).
Excess energy from a generator can be sold to the grid and purchased by a company. There are two types of PPA – a sleeved agreement and a virtual PPA. The main differences with a sleeved PPA (also known as a corporate PPA) and a virtual PPA (VPPA) is how the energy is managed at the grid and how the distribution is structured.
Within a sleeved PPA, the generator will send the energy to the grid and the power will be sent to the offtaker. It’s a direct relationship and agreement for a company to purchase the energy producer by a generator.
A virtual PPA would mean the energy is not being physically delivered to the offtaker / recipient and there’s no necessity for both parties to be connected to the same distribution network. A virtual PPA is effectively a financial arrangement, where the generated energy isn’t transferred directly to the recipient. The energy is sent to the supplier and the offtaker agrees to purchase an agreed amount of energy. Certificates and REGOs are transferred to confirm you’ve purchased renewable energy.
If you’re an energy intensive business then a power purchase agreement could be advantageous. Some of the benefits that exist are
